Teach Yourself About The True Cost Of Outside Training
Teach Yourself About The True Cost Of Outside Training Training. Weâre all agreed itâs crucial for business, right? Whether you focus on teamwork or company values, itâs essential you get on top here. As well as ensuring your company runs the way you want, efforts here will make a significant difference to employee morale. In fact, a tempting course could be all it takes to bag the best in the business. So, it isnât unusual for entrepreneurs to look to external courses which do the job for them. You may even be in the habit of sending new employees away for a week of training before they start. All the better for ensuring theyâre up to standard. The only problem is, you have no way of knowing what that external course involves. Itâs not tailored to your business, and so it might not teach the values you want. Whatâs more, sending staff away can get expensive, especially if you do the same for every employee. Instead, it might be best to take over training onsite. If you arenât convinced this is the route for you, letâs look at some of the expense it could save you. Commute and accommodation costs When employees travel for training, youâre obligated to cover their costs. Whatâs more, youâd need to pay for accommodation. Even if you send your team in groups, thatâs going to get pricey. Whatâs more, if you do this before working with new employees, thereâs every chance itâll become wasted money. You have no way of knowing whether theyâll take the training straight to another role. But, if you keep training in the office, you donât have to worry about any of that. You wonât have to pay anyone to commute to the workplace, and your meeting room will be all the accommodation you need. The training itself Youâll also need to pay for the course itself, and that can be most expensive of all. Even standard training is pricey. After all, the company in question have to cover costs of the training space and the person teaching. And, you can bet thatâll leave you out of pocket, too. But, if you took over training, you could that cost altogether. You could use a spoken presentation or simple activities to get your point across. Or, you might want to spend a little on professional training videos. You can check out companies like Lifetime Media for more information on how much that would cost. But, you can bet itâd be less than you would pay otherwise. Whatâs more, you can use those same videos for every employee and save yourself a fortune. The cost of lost labor Sending staff away would also cost you in lost labor. You may have to take on temporary staff to cover or pay overtime. On top of everything, thatâs a cost you could do without. And, by training onsite, you could do just that. In fact, by designating small groups for training each time, you can ensure your efforts here donât impact production at all.

Career Corner Interview Tips from ReFocus on Careers - Face-to-face Interviews Prepare for the Interview Part V - Hallie Crawford
Career Corner Interview Tips from ReFocus on Careers - Face-to-face Interviews Prepare for the Interview Part V I recently spoke to a great networking and career search group, Re:Focus on Careers, about creating a kick ass elevator speech. Keep an eye out for all of these free interview tips in my Career Corner posts: Prepare for the Interview The best way to ace your next job interview is to prepare for it. This may sound obvious, but its not. Too many applicants walk into an interview without knowing as much as they should about the industry, the company and its problems. Remember: You are there to solve a problem. Otherwise, the company wouldnt be hiring. Follow these steps: 5. Prepare questions of your own. Employers are as interested in your questions as they are in your answers. And theyll react favorably if you ask intelligent questions about the position, the company and the industry. (Examples: Where does this position fit into the company as a whole? Is there any problem on this job with waste/accuracy/meeting quotas, etc.? What is the largest single problem facing your staff now?) Extra Tip from Career Coach Hallie: This is so important. If this is a place you really want to work â" make sure that itâs the right fit. You donât want to jump into something without knowing the full story. Choose wisely. This is as much about the job being a fit for you as it is for the employer. If youâre interested in having me speak at your next event about finding a career you love, go here: www.halliecrawford.com/appearances.html. Iâd be happy to discuss! Writing a Resume is Important For Getting a Job
Writing a Resume is Important For Getting a JobWhen writing a resume, it's crucial to use the right language. One major reason why companies are not hiring new employees is because they are not getting to the right person. Although there are exceptions, the number of applicants who are not employable is not large. To get a job with little or no experience, you have to get the job.The best way to go about this is to focus on your strong points. Your resume should reflect what you offer to an employer. That way, you can demonstrate your skill set to a recruiter and get the job. Before you start writing your resume, you need to look at it from an objective standpoint. What's the point of your resume? This will help you create a concise summary and give you clarity as to what the resume should really be about. You have to take into consideration the length of your resume. While it's still important to get to the point, you also want to be succinct. Even if it takes you less than two minute s to read your resume, don't overdo it. Use the wordings on your resume as examples. The more concise you are, the more relevant it is to what the employer is looking for.For instance, if you want to list your company name, you need to find a brief but memorable way to do so. Write the first two words of your company name. Then, list the rest of the company name in full. It should be clear and descriptive enough to get the attention of an employer.Sometimes it helps to include the company's name or logo at the top of your resume. There are several reasons for doing this. If you're a new employee, your resume will be your most valuable document. The more credible and attractive your resume is, the more likely it is to be accepted by a recruiter. While it's never fun to get rejection after rejection, remember that it is an important part of the hiring process. When writing a resume, keep your resume succinct and to the point, but don't neglect to make it appealing.

7 Myths About Women and Leadership Debunked
7 Myths About Women and Leadership Debunked While it might seem like there are more female leaders than ever, donât let a buzzy press narrative fool you. Plenty of women are held back professionally because of culturally induced confidence issues or societal mythologies. Women arenât natural leaders. We donât work as hard as men. Weâre happier at home. Weâve all heard the many (stupid) reasons there arenât more female leaders and executives. But â" no surprise â" thereâs research to debunk every last one. Here are seven myths about women and power and why theyâre just wrong. Myth: Women Leaders Are Not as Effective as Men Women are just as effective â" and sometimes more so. When leadership consultancy Zenger Folkman examined 45,000 corporate leaders across many industries, they determined that women were more effective than men. A breakdown of the criteria determined that women excelled in three leadership pillars: âgetting things done, being role models, and delivering results.â Myth: Women Are Happier at Home Anyway Women and men are happier at work than at home (despite that men personally report being happier at home). A sociologist and womenâs studies professor at Penn State reported that both sexes experience lower levels of stress at the proverbial office than at home. And, more importantly, mothers who work full-time (and consistently) during their twenties and thirties report better mental and physical health at age 45 than mothers who work part-time, stay at home, or who experience unemployment. Myth: Men Lead All Successful Companies Not true. A 2014 international survey determined that a little over a quarter of the companies with a financial performance in the top 20 percent had female leaders. And the companies that financially performed in the bottom 20 percent? Only 19 percent of them had women at the helm. Myth: Women Arenât Willing to Work as Hard as Men Actually, if you want to be fair and catalog an entiredayâs work â" professional work, household duties, child care, cooking â" women log way more hours than men (in 22 of 28 developed countries). Women work very, VERY hard. They just arenât necessarily paid for all of it. Myth: Women Already Get Plenty of Credit If only. Michelle Haynes of the University of Massachusetts determined in her 2013 study that women âtalk downâ their achievements when working alongside successful men. Instead of claiming their rightful credit and contributions to projects, ladies instead default to praising the men in the group. Aside from being all-around rage-headachy, this habit hurts womenâs career progress and earning power in that they are less likely to pursue promotions or competitive projects. Myth: Thereâs Plenty of Room for Women at the Top Actually, a 2015 study from Columbia Business School and the University of Marylandâs Robert H. Smith School of Business illustrated that once a woman lands one of the five highest-paying executive spots in a firm, the chances of another woman joining the executive team are 51 percent lower. Damn quotas. Myth: Womenâs Shortcomings Are Their Own Fault You know that constant refrain that women never negotiate high enough salaries for themselves? That they leave money on the table? Research reported in the Harvard Business Review proposes that women âget a nervous feeling about negotiating for higher pay because they are intuiting â" correctly â" that self-advocating for higher pay would present a socially difficult situation for them â" more so than for menâ¦. Their reticence is based on an accurate read of the social environment.â Women pay a social â" and financial â" penalty for asserting themselves. And that is societyâs failure. 5 Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Big Conferences - Work It Daily
5 Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Big Conferences - Work It Daily We all know the importance and benefit of going to annual industry or career conferences. The two biggest benefits for me have been learning new things, ideas, approaches, and getting to meet in person people I have been impacted by. There are so many amazing people who I have met through my social marketing platforms and activities. My Blogtalk Radio Show has opened so many doors for me to feature and profile people who are doing really great things with their lives, careers, and businesses. Authors, entrepreneurs, empowered women, career professionals, and journalists all using social platforms to advance their causes, brands, and benefits. Having the opportunity to share these people with my sphere has been so much fun! How To Get The Most Out Of Big Conferences Attending a big conference is really no different than any other in person networking event you attend, other than itâs huge and the choices are expansive. Here are five preparation tips I use to get the absolute most out of my big conference experiences: 1. Prepare Yourself Make sure you are mentally and emotionally ready to interact with a large group at big events. This is not a small, intimate group. Get your persona ready to make a bold statement. How you look, what you say, how well you interact with groups or one on one. What do you want people to know about you, do you know everything you need to about the people you want to meet? You may have a minute or two with people. Prepare your âshort story pitch.â 2. Choose The Sessions That Best Serve Your Goals Now Commit to the sessions that best advance your personal and business goals now. By just being in those sessions, you will meet other people who are there with similar goals. Go to sessions that can advance your learning, expertise and networking with the ârightâ people. 3. Focus On How People Have Impacted You When you get time with whoever it is you want to meet, lead with how they have helped or impacted you. Use specific examples. We all need that confirmation what we do is actually helping others. Knowing that is a huge motivational plus that drives us to keep going! 4. Have Specific Goals In Mind Why do you want to meet certain people? Do you see possibilities for collaboration? Do you share complimentary niches? Would you like to be a guest blogging or invite them to be on yours? With limited time, having specific reasons and goals in mind can yield very effective results. 5. Timely Follow Up Follow up with a sincere thank you and outline any specific things discussed that need to be developed or attended to. Tweet, post, and blog about your personal experience being at the sessions, networking, and parties, and especially meeting them! How do you prepare for big conferences? How to Manage Single Mom Dating When You Have a Demanding Career
How to Manage Single Mom Dating When You Have a Demanding Career Single mom dating isnt easy. Being a single mother, juggling kids and a career while trying to have a love life takes work. But its doable.Being a single mother comes with plenty of challenges, many of which have caused me to Google how exactly to be a superhero (because so many single parents just are). Add to that pile of endless Google searches how to have a social life while raising kids and simultaneously having a demanding career. Honestly, by the end of the day Im so tired I can barely manage to take any time for myself before calling it a day and crawling into bed. And if were being completely honest, the idea of making small talk with strangers is at the bottom of the list of things I want to do. Yep, dating and networking are essentially the same thing. As Charlotte from SATC so famously saidWhere is he?Heavy sighs all around. Of curse, like most, I want the end result that comes from dating a happy relationshi p with a partner that I can lean on leid only romantically, but as a true companion and best friend. But the work that goes into it is a bit more complicated than just making empty wishes with zero effort. Ultimately the one thing that is needed to successfully juggle a career, single parenting, and dating is the desire tomake it work. Thats why I have stopped making excuses and started pushing myself to put these simple steps into practice with online dating. Heres my advice to you broken down into steps.1. Use an app that meets your dating needs.I tried using multiple apps at once, and welches instantly overwhelmed. From Tinder, to Bumble, to OkCupid,to Match, its safe to say there are many apps out there to quench your online dating desires. I chose the one that I felt represented what I was seeking in dating and a partner overall.2. Dont judge online dating based on the creeps.Yes, there are most certainly creeps, and its likely that you will encounter at least a few as you try to navigate the online dating world. Keep in mind that, despite the few creeps, there are good guys (and women) out there,so just keep on keeping on.3. Be upfront about your single parent status. My son is the most important person in my life, and he is my first priority. Anyone who cant understand that is immediately eliminated, which saves me time that is already limited and precious. Being honest from the get-go eliminates any confusion or issues further down the line.4. However... do not share everything. At least not right away. Do not unload any details about your ex, your divorce, your custody battle, etc. (you get the picture). Basically, any heavy stuff should wait until youve established an actual relationship and gotten close enough to share more intimate details of yourself/your life. If you need to vent about these things, call your friends or seek a trusted therapist to help you sort it out.5. Be clear on what youre seeking out of this, with yourself and the other party. Hookups, dating, and an actual relationship are very different things, and there are many people seeking a variation of the above. Make sure the person youre spending your time with is on the same exact page from the beginning.6. Meet for coffee or a quick drink before scheduling a real date.Chemistry and attraction is hard to mistake if the small talk is painful or Im just not interested, I know. Why schedule a date and waste both of our time after that?7. Make use of your free time as a single parent. As a single mom, I try to date exclusively when my son is with my ex. However, there are times when our schedule is not as stable as expected, so when a situation arises, I lean heavily on my circle. I also know that just because there are two parents doesnt mean that both are actively parenting (trust me, I know), so this leads to my next tip...8. Ask your friends and family to help/babysit.See above re leaning on your people. Remember to return the favor and you will continue to st ay in their good graces9. When all else fails, find a good babysitter onwhom to rely.Ask for recommendations from your circle, or use a trusted service like Care.com to place a nanny or sitter.10. Schedule dates on days and at times that are more convenient.Yes, this obviously can also mean when you dont have your child, but overall think when you can manage to squeeze some adult time in. If soccer games are dominating your Mondays and Fridays, and you have a presentation you know youll be working late on Wednesday night, but Thursday night is free and clear, plan accordingly.11. Listen to your intuition and inner voice.Take it slow. Allow time to reisepass before you make any snap decisions or introduce your children to the person youre dating. If it feels right, great. If it doesnt... Pay attention and examine why.The advice above also applies to any potential loves you meet irl organically, of course. Prince Charming just may come strolling down grocery aisle 5 and pick up the sa me brand of guac you were in mid-reach of. One never knows how the stars will align.Ultimately only you can decide if a situation or relationship is right for you and your family. Take your time and dont rush into anything. Mr. or Ms. Right will be patient and willing to take the time needed in getting to know you, and your child(ren) once the time is right. A partner worth having will always respect your career and single parent status.--Karen Schneider works for bareMinerals in weltweit Packaging + CreativeOperationsand has worked in a variety of industries over the span of her career, including digital media, fashion apparel, and wine spirits.
